Deathly Hallows Cookies

Rosmerta's Recipes - Deathly Hallows Cookies

Next time you attend a Harry Potter party or decide to just sit at home and watch a Harry Potter dvd, be sure to make these delicious shortbread cookies.

Recipe was sent to us by Mary who found the generic recipe on the Craftinomican website, Mary just adjusted it for a DH theme.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • a clean bottlecap or other small circular cut-out device
  • cookie cutter

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.

Step 2: In the bowl of a stand mixer (or just use a hand mixer and a large bowl of your choice), whip together your butter and brown sugar.

Step 3: Very slowly add the flour until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Step 4: Place the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth (should not take more than a minute). Roll the dough to about 1/3" thick.

Step 5: Cut out triangle shapes using the cookie cutter or a knife.

Step 6: Press the bottlecap or other circular object into the dough in the style of the 'Deathly Hallows' symbol. Carve a line down the middle with a knife to create the wand part of the symbol.

Step 7: Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or wax paper). These cookies don't spread out in the oven so feel free to put them quite close together. Bake these in your 300 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until slightly golden.

Step 8: Allow to cool slightly and then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.

Step 9: As with all shortbread, you can eat them plain, give them a sweet frosting glaze, or sandwich them together with some chocolate or caramel. These are really quick and tasty.
Reflection
1)What went well
Some things that went well with our baking were we all did our parts to get the ingredients necessary for our cookies. We all took turns mixing and kneading the dough and cut out cookie shapes
2)What didn’t  go so well
The things that didn’t go so well were the dough and our oven.  The problem with our dough was that it was too sticky and it took us 20 minutes to get it right. The problem with the oven was that it turned itself off somehow. In result of making us stay after school a bit.
3)What would you do differently
Something I would do differently would probably pay more attention to how we were making our dough. Also try not to rush. When sort of rushed it and the cookies didn’t come out fully cooked.
4)What did you learn
During this baking process we learned how to mix dough and knead dough. Also that not enough flower will make the dough more sticky and harder to work with.

Recipe originally found at http://www.canadianliving.com/food/healthy_oven_fries.php and adapted for the classroom by Mrs. Gelowitz.
1)   What went well?
The things that went well for us were that we cut our potatoes pretty neat and even. We all cut our own potatoes into our desired shape and use the knifes skills we learned in class. We made various shapes of fries such as wedges, stick fries and chips.
2)   What didn’t go well
The things that didn’t go so well were when I was going to take the fries out to be flipped, I forgot to open the oven door a bit to let the heat out. In result of burning my face. Also when I went to flip the fries, I flipped some of the fries with my fingers and I ended up burning my hand.
3)   What would you do differently?
The things I would do differently would probably be to make more shapes of the fries because I would’ve had more practice cutting the potatoes into different shapes using different cuts. I would also have added some ketchup with my fries.
4)   What did you learn
The things I learned were how to make fries and a lot of knife skills. We learned how to use a Santoku knife. This knife id really a neat knife because you can use it to pickup what you cut. It also looks really cool. The videos we watched in class taught us a lot of useful knife techniques.

Banana Boats

1 serving
4 servings
Large banana
2 tsp chocolate chips
2 tsp granola
1 tbsp miniature marshmallows
4 large unpeeled bananas
8 tsp chocolate chips
8 tsp granola
¼ cup miniature marshmallows

Place each banana on a 20 cm square of foil; crimp and shape foil around bananas so they sit flat.  Cut each banana lengthwise about 2 cm deep, leaving 2 cm uncut at both ends.  Gently pull each banana peel open, forming a pocket.  Fill pockets with chocolate chips, granola and marshmallows.
Oven – preheat oven to 325 F. Bake bananas in oven for 5-7 minutes or until marshmallows are melted and golden brown.
Barbeque – Place the banana boats on the grill and close the lid. Cook over medium heat for 4-5 minutes or until marshmallows are melted and golden brown.
Campfire – Place grill over hot coals (NOT over a flame). Grill bananas for 5-7 minutes or until marshmallows are melted and golden brown.

Reflection

What went well?
The Cooking went very well. We all made one successful banana boat. Plus i had second because Ines didn't want hers! Except Ines didn't put chocolate chips on hers:( We followed all the steps in order and the banana boats turned out great! We all did our jobs. Brittany washed the dishes, Ines wiped and sweeped, and I dried and took the boats out of the oven! What did not go so well?
Some things that didn't go well were when i opened the oven. i forgot to open it a bit to let the heat escape and the heat rushed onto my face. Another thing was i told Brittany to drain the water, but we forgot to clean our spoons. The one other mistake i made was I poured the bleach without rubber gloves and i got some on my skin. Since those mistakes I've made have been recognized by myself, I've learned my lesson and will correct them for the future.

What would you have done different?
Some things I would have done differently were probably to ad more ingredients to my product. Such as more chocolate chips, more marshmallows, and more granola. Ha ha thinking back now, i realized i really should have done that. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy My original one! I'm just saying it would 've tasted better!

Something I have learned?
something  i learnd was to make banana boats. ive never made one or had one before! its deffenitly domthing i will make more for myself, family, and friends! Had a great time! making this recipe! Hooray!!
