Rosmerta's Recipes - Deathly Hallows Cookies
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) of butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- a clean bottlecap or other small circular cut-out device
- cookie cutter
Directions:
Step 1: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F.
Step 2: In the bowl of a stand mixer (or just use a hand mixer and a large bowl of your choice), whip together your butter and brown sugar.
Step 3: Very slowly add the flour until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
Step 4: Place the dough out onto a floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth (should not take more than a minute). Roll the dough to about 1/3" thick.
Step 5: Cut out triangle shapes using the cookie cutter or a knife.
Step 6: Press the bottlecap or other circular object into the dough in the style of the 'Deathly Hallows' symbol. Carve a line down the middle with a knife to create the wand part of the symbol.
Step 7: Place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (or wax paper). These cookies don't spread out in the oven so feel free to put them quite close together. Bake these in your 300 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until slightly golden.
Step 8: Allow to cool slightly and then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.
Step 9: As with all shortbread, you can eat them plain, give them a sweet frosting glaze, or sandwich them together with some chocolate or caramel. These are really quick and tasty.
Reflection
1)What went well
Some things that went well with our baking were we all did our parts to get the ingredients necessary for our cookies. We all took turns mixing and kneading the dough and cut out cookie shapes
2)What didn’t go so well
The things that didn’t go so well were the dough and our oven. The problem with our dough was that it was too sticky and it took us 20 minutes to get it right. The problem with the oven was that it turned itself off somehow. In result of making us stay after school a bit.
3)What would you do differently
Something I would do differently would probably pay more attention to how we were making our dough. Also try not to rush. When sort of rushed it and the cookies didn’t come out fully cooked.
4)What did you learn
During this baking process we learned how to mix dough and knead dough. Also that not enough flower will make the dough more sticky and harder to work with.
